Jimmys Red Hots | Chicago

Jimmys Red Hots was a great real Chicago experience...everything about it...from the gritty west side neighborhood (where my Dad grew up and most definitely not a tourist area - No Loitering Panhandling or Soliciting Violators will be Prosecuted - Soliciting? While you're eating a red hot) to the 4 well seasoned husky guys behind the counter whom I was told pack heat...to the don't mess with me tattooed guys in line (my read is that those tats are not a yuppie fashion statement - they did them because where they were there just wasn't a lot else to do. One guy had a shirt with Thou Shalt Not Kill on his back - at first I thought it was a reminder for him not to kill then I decided he was telling other guys not to kill him) - to the excellent simple Vienna Beef Red Hot (just mustard, regular relish, onions and hot sport peppers -  not a "Chicago Dog" messed up with that toxic neon green relish) with a delicious ton of fresh hand cut fries or as they say "Loads of Fries" (much better and not at all like McDonalds) wrapped on top and around the buried dog (they should call it fries with a hot dog - those fries are not trans free - are soaking in animal fat - they are soooo good) all for just $2.27 - that's right a red hot with a ton of fries for $2.27 - ho ho what year was that time warp I was in - 1954?...Remember this is Chicago and people are fussy and get cranky if you ask for ketchup and can you blame them really? - and also make it easy on yourself and the help and don't complicate the order - just say a red hot with everything and you will be considered worthy. A cheap eats in low-rent place in a low-rent district of Chicago. A fries and weiner winner! A VERY simple menu on the wall either a Red Hot or a Polish (with a"LOAD of Fries" remember) and regular or large soft drinks - I guess they also do tamales but I sure didn't or want to notice. Make sure you get the right change back! If you click on my pictures you just may get a larger version.
